Osteopathy Can Help Pregnancy Related Pelvic Pain

A mum who is 26 weeks pregnant has been experiencing chronic left-sided pelvic pain of several weeks duration. The pain has left her unable to work and Acupuncture, Physio, and bracing of the pelvis has been unsuccessful in alleviating her pain for any length of time.

So, what is the problem?

One year ago this mum had a burst appendix which had led to severe peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity). She had to have extensive surgery to remove the burst appendix. Within a year she fell pregnant. Then the pain began.

When reviewed with an Osteopathic eye this problem makes a lot of sense. As the bump grows, the ligaments that suspend the womb to the pelvis also have to stretch. Unfortunately, these ligaments live very close to the appendix site and which now has been surgically scarred. The ligaments aren’t as free to stretch on the right side. As the baby grows within the womb it literally pulls the sacrum on the right forward causing the left side to be pulled relatively backwards and out of position. By only working on the pelvis and not the uterine ligaments, the source of the problem was left untreated.  Every time the baby grows the pelvis misaligns more. The solution to this Mum’s problem lies in stretching the ligaments that suspend the womb to the pelvis. This can be done gently, safely and carefully with specialized Osteopathic techniques.
